Looking for telecommuting tips from someone “in the know”? You’ve come to the right place!
I’m here to guide you through the maze of scams, frauds and downright cheats, as well as ensure you understand all about the ins and outs of telecommuting.
Let’s get started. First, have you ever telecommuted? No? Maybe you have once or twice a week in a previous or current position. OR, maybe you feel you have that entrepreneurial spirit in you and you just read somewhere that you can make 5000 clams a week online! Let’s hope you don’t believe everything you read, whether it be about a 140 year old hot dog or that simply stuffing envelopes can make you a millionaire.
Next, what idea do you have in mind when you think about working from home? Do you fantasize about all of the extra time you will now have to clean, chat with long lost friends, and spend time with your much neglected family? Maybe you envision slipping out for a cup of coffee and a long, luxurious mani/pedi midday… the company will never know.
Shame! Shame! to those of you considering shirking your responsibilities to your company; even your own. Working from home is a great privilege, enjoyed by very few. It should not be taken lightly.
Lastly, can you work efficiently and effectively in a home environment? Many people find it very difficult to stay focused while working from home. Others find that they need the camaraderie of their co-workers and the ability to step farther than a few feet away from their workspace now and then.
Prior to taking those first steps toward a home-based job or starting your own home-based business, spend a few weekend days in your home office as if it were a regular work day. Get up prior to the time you typically begin work, go to your home office at about the time you would arrive at work and stay in your office until the time you would usually leave work. Only allow yourself to leave the office during your lunch hour.
Did it feel comfortable to be in there for eight or more hours at a stretch? Did you sense you were more productive? Or did you feel confined and isolated? Did interruptions from your family make you lose focus more easily than your co-workers do at the office?
Working at home definitely has it’s benefits, but nothing is perfect. Hopefully these telecommuting tips have helped you to begin thinking about everything involved in this endeavor.
